2025 Girls Who Code
Overview
Software.org: the BSA Foundation is proud to partner for its 11th consecutive year with Girls Who Code for the 2025 Summer Immersion Program (SIP). This program addresses the gender gap in STEM by bringing together young women from high schools nationwide to learn coding in virtual classrooms led by mentors from industry-leading companies.
During the two-week SIP, Girls Who Code instructors will primarily focus on teaching the basics of web development through interactive lessons and projects. Students will delve into Game Design, covering beginner and intermediate computer science concepts such as UX design basics, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for web development. In addition to coding, students will engage in mentorship workshops, explore career opportunities in STEM through interactions with women in the software industry, and meet with members of Congress and other high-ranking government officials.
Key Highlights:
- Interactive Learning: Students, many with no prior coding experience, will learn web development basics and game design principles.
- Mentorship and Career Exploration: Students will gain insights from women in the tech industry and participate in workshops to learn about various career paths.
- High-Profile Engagements: Participants will have the opportunity to meet and interact with influential figures in government and industry.
Software.org and Girls Who Code are committed to closing the gender gap in technology and inspiring the next generation of female tech leaders. We look forward to another successful year of empowering young women through this transformative program.

Teachers
Savannah Frederiksen Instructor
My name is Savannah Frederiksen (she/her), and I am a rising junior at Tufts University majoring in Human Factors Engineering. I am from Dallas, Texas, and currently living in Boston, Massachusetts. This is my second year teaching at SIP, but my first as a Lead TA! I have been involved with SIP for five years now, since doing SIP as a student in 2021. Outside of Girls Who Code, I also coach rowing! I love to row and am a member of the Tufts Varsity Rowing Team. I also love to read, listen to music, and talk to friends! I am very excited to be back for another summer at Girls Who Code and meet all the students!
Arya Nalavade Instructor
My name is Arya Nalavade (she/her) and I just graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Biomedical Engineering. I am now pursuing my masters at Georgia Tech in Bioinformatics. This is my third summer with Girls Who Code, and I’m so excited to be part of the Summer Immersion Program once again! Outside of teaching, I love dancing, singing, working out, and reading. I’m really looking forward to connecting with students and watching them grow their confidence and skills over the next two weeks!
Marie Flessa Instructor
My name is Marie Flessa (she/her) and I am a rising sophomore at the University of Washington majoring in engineering. This is my first year as a TA for SIP, but I participated as a student in 2021! In my free time, I love spending time outdoors, running, and baking. I’m so excited to take part in such a great program again!

Software.org was proud to host the first partner-led session of the 2025 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program, part of our two-week collaboration to build skills, confidence, and community.
Following Tuesday’s welcome session—featuring reflections from GWC alumna Tyler Madison, Stefania Durden, Nicholas Gibbs, and Lilia Stone—students returned for an inspiring roundtable on Learning Pathways for an AI Future🌟

Today, Software.org proudly celebrated the 2025 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program students as they wrapped up two weeks of learning, building, and community.
The day opened with a Game Jam showcase, where students presented original games built in p5.js, and featured remarks from Senator Amy Klobuchar during the graduation session.
Thank you to Girls Who Code for the continued partnership, and to the students for reminding us what the future of tech truly looks like.

As part of the 2025 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program, Software.org hosted a conversation on mentorship and early career growth with colleagues from Business Software Alliance.
Panelists reflected on the role of mentorship at different stages of their journeys—from professors and early managers to peers and friends. They spoke about the value of curiosity, asking questions, and being open to change, especially when the path forward isn’t entirely clear.
We're grateful to Meghan Pensyl for leading such a thoughtful discussion, and to Stefania Durden, Lindsay Emery, Naji Glover, and Laura Vingan for sharing your experiences with honesty and care.
